Working in medicine can be an exhausting experience. One harrowing day of helping folks with health issues can make it very difficult to get out of bed the following morning. Sometimes melancholy can slip in and, before one knows it, negativity is pervading their work and home life. It’s been proven by more than one study that starting the day by expressing gratitude is a good way to shift into a positive mental attitude, but without guidance and previous experience in doing so, it can be difficult to form these thought patterns. What can be helpful, is to find some source of humour—a lighthearted story or video to kick start your foray into the workplace.

There
are very few fields of medicine that serve patients who arrive happy. It’s
an environment meant to assist those in pain covering massive spectrum of
treatment, with the hopes that people will leave happy. While its not
the healthcare administration’s mandate to be happy, in a setting of fear and
uncertainty, people will, whether consciously or not, pick up on unhappiness.
This is why it is so important to start your day off by taking some of the
proverbial best medicine: laughter. Find
a video of a dog wearing shoes; listen to a
comedy podcast or read a few ‘dad
jokes’—your sense of humour will be the best guide to find what works for
you to start your day with laughter. From there, it’s easy to find things to be
grateful for. A good chuckle is the best place to start.
